Watching movies to catch up

"Snakes, why did it have to be snakes"

Well, this past week, I watched all of the Indiana Jones movies. I figured what a better way to get ready for the new Indiana Jones movie being released this summer than by watching all of the previous movies. If anyone hasn't watched them in a while, I recommend watching them, they are great movies. I really enjoy both Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. I especially like the addition of Sean Connery as Indiana's dad in The Last Crusade. All of the movies have an excellent cast, and by the looks at the new Indiana Jones movie, it should be no exception. I plan to watch The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, and Batman Begins soon, so I can be ready for the new movies this summer. They are all excellent movies, so why not.

As well, yesterday I got to see Rear Window in my Film class. Rear Window was done by Hitchcock. I have actually not seen one of his movies before so it was great to watch it. The movie reminded me of Disturbia.

Have a great night!

Oscars

Well, as all of you are aware, No Country for Old Men took home Best Picture at the oscars last night. I got to watch a bit of the ceremony last night, and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, I couldn't watch the whole thing because of some things I had last night, including some studying for my mid-term today, which went very well. There were a few surprises, but glad to see some of the movies take home some awards. I was really glad to see The Bourne Ultimatum take home the three oscars it was nominated for, which were Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Editing. I was disappointed to see Transformers lose to The Golden Compass for Best Visual Effects, I haven't seen The Golden Compass but I was really impressed with the visual effects in Transformers that I thought it would win. I was also glad to see Ratatouiee win for Best Animated Feature. Kind of hard to tell you of the other categories as I haven't watched a lot of the films that were nominated at the oscars.

Speaking of oscars, I actually saw the movie Juno this weekend, and of course it took home an oscar for Best Original Screenplay. I thought it was pretty good. I saw Vantage Point as well, and it was awesome. I highly recommend it!

My Database Assignment

Okay, I was once again asked to do an assignment for my IS Management class. I was reading about Databases and decided to the Closing Case Study about Ben and Jerry’s and Bigelow Teas. The questions and answers are as follows:

1. Ben and Jerry’s tracks a wealth of information on each pint of ice cream and frozen yogurt. If you were to design Ben and Jerry’s data warehouse, what dimensions of information would you include? As you develop your list of dimensions, consider every facet of Ben and Jerry’s business operations, from supply chain management to retail store monitoring.

The dimensions of information that I would include are sales of each product, a list of each kind of ice cream and how much they are selling, the sizes that are available and how much is sold of each one, what areas have the best sales for Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, any complaints about any of the ice cream, and how much ice cream is shipped to each location.

2. Databases are the underlying technology that allows Ben and Jerry’s to track ice cream and frozen yogurt information. Based on your knowledge of databases, what sort of tables or files of information would Ben and Jerry’s need in its databases? What would be the primary keys for each of those? What would be the foreign keys among those to create the necessary relationships?

Ben and Jerry’s would need the type of ice cream and frozen yogurts they sell, the order dates, the locations where ice cream and frozen yogurt is going, what products are actually sold, and what do the customers go after the most. The order number would be the primary number for the type of ice cream sold and the order date, the truck number is the primary key for the delivery locations, the customer number would be the primary key for what ice cream is sold and what they go after the most. The order number and the truck number would be foreign keys to help determine the order file to help determine what will be shipped.

3. According to the discussion of Bigelow Teas, part of the success of BusinessObjects comes from its look and feel being similar to Microsoft Excel. Why do you believe this is true? When introducing employees to enterprisewide BI tools such as BusinessObjects, why is it an advantage to have the BI tool look like and work like personal productivity software tools? Why was a similar look and feel to spreadsheet software more important than word processing or presentation software?

When I use a program that is similar to a previous program that I have used, then applying what I know from the previous program to this program is easy, especially if it is a program like Microsoft Excel, where everything feels easy to manage with that program. When anyone is able to use a program that is similar to something they are familiar with and doesn’t have any problems working with it, then it should be easy to function and makes the learning process go faster. Word processing is always easy to use and presentation software is not entirely necessary for the position, so having the same feel to spreadsheet software gets the information on the database faster so all the information on how to improve the company can always be updated.

4. How could Bigelow Teas open up its business intelligence information to its suppliers and resellers? What benefits would Bigelow Teas gain by keeping its suppliers and resellers more informed with business intelligence? What types of business intelligence would Bigelow Teas want to exclude its suppliers and resellers from seeing? Why?

Bigelow Teas could open its business intelligence information to its suppliers and resellers by showing them what products are being sold the most and what to advertise and focus on when customers come into the store. Bigelow Teas would gain better sales by letting their suppliers and resellers know about business intelligence, as well as what products will succeed and what won’t. The type of business intelligence that would be only for Bigelow Teas is your own internal operations because it would not be wise to give that information to others and have them use your strategies against you.

5. Neil Hastie, CIO at TruServe Corporation, once described most decision making in all types of businesses as “a lot of by-guess and by-golly, a lot of by-gut, and a whole lot of paper reports.” That statement is not kind to managers in general or to IT specialists charged with providing the right people with the right technology to make the right decisions. What’s the key to turning Neil’s statement into a positive one? Is it training? It is providing timely information access? Is it providing everyone with a wide assortment of data-mining tools? Other solutions? Perhaps it’s a combination of several answers?

The key to turning Neil’s statement into a positive one is by training, providing timely information access, and making sure all statistics are accounted for. With all of these elements put together, the key can be turned, and the decisions made can be beneficial for the company, and the company can succeed.

Once again, let me know of anything that seems incorrect with the following questions I just answered. I am open to improvement.

As well, I just found out this morning that Paramount and DreamsWorks both switched over to Blu-Ray. Now all the major movie industries will be producing in Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray is the winner!

That's right folks, the format war is now over. Toshiba held a press conference in Tokyo over 12 hours ago, and announced that they would stop manufacturing HD-DVD players and discs. They pretty much stated that they would completely stop manufacturing HD-DVD and start limiting the amount of HD-DVD products, and stop shipping HD-DVD players and recorders by the end of March. That means the movie industry can focus on getting everyone's attention on high definition with Blu-Ray.

Universal Studios responded to Toshiba's decision today by announcing they would switch over to Blu-Ray. This will be the first time that Universal Studios is producing anything on the Blu-Ray format, as they supported the HD-DVD format since it started, up until now. That leaves Paramount Pictures to switch back over to Blu-Ray, which I won't be surprised if we hear anything from them within the next 24 hours. I will keep you updated on what happens as all post-format war unfolds.

So, anyone that is still thinking of buying an HD-DVD player, don't bother. It's funny, I almost considered buying an HD-DVD player at Wal-Mart back in early November, when they had a special sale for an HD-DVD player model, which was $98. I didn't have an HDTV, and still don't for the moment, but thought of getting one for good quality movies. I am now glad that I didn't get it. When I get an HDTV, I will pick up a Blu-Ray player.

Happy Presidents Day

First of all, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I certainly enjoyed the day. I had a wonderful day today. In fact, I enjoyed the weekend, I got to do a lot this weekend.

As well, you might have heard rumors that Toshiba will stop manufacturing HD-DVD, the press conference will be held at 5:00 pm....in Tokyo. Within the next few hours, we should learn more about the future of HD-DVD, and the future of Blu-Ray. I am very happy to hear this, because now all of the movie industries can focus on distributing on one format instead of confusing the customers about the two formats. I think that both formats are very good, and I am very glad to see Blu-Ray take the gold because it has better potential in my opinion. But nonetheless, I am very happy to see the format war coming to an end. Now when I get an HDTV, I can just pick up a Blu-Ray player at the same time. I will report back as soon as the official news is out.

Also, this weekend, I saw the movie The Bucket List. I really liked the movie, they did a great job with it. I like Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, and they were both excellent in the movie. I also saw that Jumper took number one this weekend, I do recommend it.

Well, hopefully all of you have had the chance to check out the trailer for the new Indiana Jones movie. I got to see it this morning when it debuted on the internet, and I have to say that I am impressed with it, I am really looking forward to seeing it. As well, tonight I went to see Jumper and the trailer played right before the movie started. The movie should be very good. I will have to watch the three Indiana Jones movies soon before this one hits theaters.

Like I said, I saw Jumper tonight, and I have to say that I enjoyed the movie. For anyone that doesn't know what the movie is about, Hayden Christensen plays a man who can teleport, or jump from one place to another. He uses his power for himself and for selfish reasons. Soon he is hunted by a group that is trying to get rid of all the "Jumpers", Samuel L. Jackson plays one of the members of the group. I totally found the concept fascinating. Science fiction fans should enjoy. There are fun little moments in the movie. That is one of my recommendations for the weekend. We do have a great lineup of movies that have come out this weekend. "Jumper", "The Spiderwick Chronicles", "Step Up 2 the Streets", and "Definitely, Maybe".Hopefully something for everyone.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Indiana Jones Trailer

I want to let everyone know that tomorrow morning will be the debut of the trailer for the new "Indiana Jones" movie coming out this summer. I am very stoked about it. It will debut on Good Morning America, following it's premiere on the airwaves, it will be on the Indiana Jones website to view, and also for anyone interested in checking out "The Spiderwick Chronicles", it will be playing before the movie tomorrow, yes that's right, it is starting tomorrow. I will try to go see either that or "Jumper" tomorrow. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the trailer for the new "Indiana Jones" movie.

Special Effects

Well, I recently saw the movie "The Game Plan" I thought it was a pretty good movie. It was a little longer than it needed to be, but overall, it was well done. The Rock did a good job at being a selfish football player who only cares about himself. Like I said, I think it was a little longer than it needed to be, but I liked it.

Also, recently I went through and watched a movie that was released years ago, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within". The animation in that movie is incredible, it looks very realistic. It is cool to see how movie special effects have changed within the last few years. All these movies like Final Fantasy were pioneering many of these special effects that have changed the way we watch movies. I remember first watching "Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest" and thinking how incredible the computer generated characters were, like when I was looking at Davy Jones (the one with the squid-like tentacles), I wasn't too sure it it was the actor with make-up or it was computer generated. It is really cool to go back and watch these movies and see how they have changed the movie industry.

Well, "Fools Gold" was number 1 this weekend, haven't seen it, I am waiting for this weekend when Jumper comes out, I am also planning to check out The Spiderwick Chronicles, which looks like it has good potential. As well, the following weekend has Vantage Point, and Be Kind Rewind. I am sure there are other movies coming out that will be good as well.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Once again for my Information Systems class, I was asked to answer a few questions on developing an information system. So I will go through and state my answer on the following questions. Feel free to give your opinion or any suggestions.

1. What are some ways that a company can help to minimize the poor project planning, poor cost estimating, poor measurements, poor milestone tracking, poor change control, and poor quality control of software development?

A company can minimize poor project planning in a number of ways, they could hire a few more members to help in the planning department and to make sure that the planning stage goes smooth and that any potential problems are identified, or everyone part of the planning department can make sure that everything will work, go through the project a few more times to make sure there aren’t any bugs with the plan. Poor cost estimating can be minimized by having the members part of the planning stage go through the plans and find out everything that would be required for the system, and then find out the costs of each part. The design team that would go through the blueprint can make sure everything is logical and if anything doesn’t seem right about the measurements, go back to those involved in the planning to correct any miscalculations can minimize poor measurements. Having members of the company keep an eye on the progress of the system can minimize poor milestone tracking. Poor change control can be minimized by having the planners of the system and the main designers go through the stages of the system and make sure everything is going according to plan. Poor quality control of software development can be minimized by having the main members involved in the making of the system check up on each stage of the system to make sure that everything is going well, and have each member of each step report what they did and how everything went.

2. One specific problem in any software development project is testing. Describe some ways in which an organization can help ensure proper testing in software development.

An organization can help ensure proper testing in software development by having instructions on how the software is suppose to work and what it is suppose to do, so when the testers work with it, they know if it is working according to plan. Other ways to help ensure proper testing is to look for all of the bugs that could be corrupting the software or system, and then to report them immediately and to give a detailed description on what went wrong.

3. Evaluate the SDLC phases that seem most important to you and outline specific areas of the software development process that deserve greatest attention.

The phases of the SDLC that I feel are of most importance to me are the planning, analysis, and design. These are the phases where you are planning the system and outline any potential flaws and to correct them, and all of this can be done without having money oozing from the company. In the other phases, if you develop the system and then it’s tested and you find out that there are flaws, then you just used a lot of money for flaws that could have been prevented. I feel the areas that deserve the greatest attention are planning and designing, in these stages are where information systems are born, and where they can be created to perfection.

4. Explain the cost of finding errors later rather than sooner and explain how more time spent in the analysis and the design phases could save money.

Trying to develop a system for your business already costs you time and money. You need to fund to develop a system for your business and it takes time to put the system together. Let’s say that the system didn’t work during the testing period, well, you just wasted so much money in a system that doesn’t work at all, now you need to redevelop the system and strive to pull out more money for the new system, you are simply spending double the amount that you could have saved with better planning. The analysis and design phases may take more time to make sure something goes right, but it would be better than finding out in the later stages that there are flaws and have to go back and redevelop the system, taking more of your time and money.

Okay, I would like to share with you one of the movies that I saw this past weekend, I ended up renting the movie "Mr. Woodcock", I do have to admit it was pretty funny. Mr. Woodcock, who was played by Billy Bob Thorton, reminded me of the insensitive people that I have met, it's crazy. If you like dumb comedies, you will laugh through this. Another film that I watched this past week in my film class was Citizen Kane, I was really impressed with the technicalities of the movie. It was very well done, especially for a film made back in 1941. It is very interesting to find a lot of these old movies and to discover why they are so precious, even today.

A good looking summer

Well, I saw a new poster for the movie "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" and it looks pretty cool. You can follow the link right here and see the poster for yourself:

http://www.aintitcool.com/images2008/princecaspian1sheetbig.jpg

I am looking forward to the movie. I read in the USA Today and there was a section where they were talking about some of the movies that are coming out this year. I have mentioned "The Dark Knight", there are also other good ones coming out like "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls", "Quantum of Solace" the next James Bond film, the X-Files sequel, and these were some of the major releases that were listed on the article in USA Today, a few other new movies listed to be released this year that are of interest are "Iron Man", "Incredible Hulk", "Speed Racer", as well as sequels to "The Mummy" "Harry Potter", and believe or not..."Madagascar". There are plenty of other upcoming movies this year that have great potential. Some are coming out this month like "Jumper", "Vantage Point", "Be Kind Rewind", "Spiderwick Chronicles", and others.

Just to shift to another topic, I was thinking about how much the home entertainment industry has changed within the last 10 years. Years ago, the only way to watch a movie at home was on VHS or maybe on TV. Now, we have many options, the big format that has changed the home media industry is DVD. DVDs have much better quality, and can do much more than VHS could. We also now have Blu-Ray, as well as HD-DVD for the moment. These formats allow us to watch a movie in a home theater, which consists of a big screen TV and a surround sound system. As well, we can also watch our movies on the go, either with a portable DVD player, or with a portable media device like the iPod. I have an iPod and I have stored many movies onto it. The home entertainment industry has gone in two amazing directions, the big and the small.
