Circuit City

This really isn't breaking news, but for those who don't know, Circuit City is officially going out of business. I knew they were in trouble for a while, but I thought it still had a decent chance. Anyway, they have announced about 12 days ago that they will be closing their doors soon. I believe I read March 31 was when they officially close their doors, every Circuit City store. One of the reasons I bring this up is that if you are looking for good sales, this may be one of your best chances to get a good deal on something. All of their electronics will be going on sale since they will try to get rid of all their items before they go out of business. That was where I bought my little surround system, for a really good price, back in May. I am sure you can get a really good deal there. There are still other good stores with many good deals here and there too.

Well, for this weekend at the movies, I only know one movie that has caught my attention, Taken. It stars Liam Neeson, and it looks rather interesting, it has to with him trying to retrieve his daughter who has been kidnapped. I will probably check it out soon.

Planet Earth Blu-Ray

I have stayed true to my family challenge, but still had some money left on my Best Buy gift card, so I decided to buy Planet Earth on Blu-Ray. When I got a Blu-Ray player for Christmas, this was one of the Blu-Ray sets that everyone kept recommending me to get, so I finally decided the price was decent and I bought it. I have only watched one episode off it, and part of another, and it looks absolutely amazing. The picture quality is incredible, detail is stunning. This series was shot with High Definition cameras, and therefore, it's like it was made for Blu-Ray and HDTVs. When you watch it on an HDTV and on Blu-Ray, you will be wowed. They usually have a demo of it playing at Best Buy.

As for Box Office news this weekend, Paul Blart stayed on top of the box office status. Kind of shocked, I haven't seen it yet, but I really wasn't expecting it to reach number one in a weekend for box office stats. Of course, the oscar nominated films started earning a little more revenue this weekend, Slumdog Millionaire reached number 5, and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button reached number 9. Not too bad.

Oscar Nominations

With the oscar nominations announced this morning, there were plenty of surprises. One that obviously wasn't a surprise was that Heath Ledger received an oscar nomination for his role as the Joker, I am so happy. I was hoping that The Dark Knight would receive a Best Picture nomination, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. However, it did receive a total of eight nominations including the oscar nomination for Heath Ledger. It should win a fair deal of them. The movies that were nominated for Best Picture were Slumdog Millionaire, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, and The Reader. I have not seen any of the best picture nominees, so I can't judge which one I think is better. There have been some pretty good nominations here and there. Wall-E received a total of six nominations, including Best Animated Feature (no surprise). If you want the total list of all the nominations, just follow the link:

http://www.oscars.org/awards/81academyawards/nominees.html

We will see what wins when the ceremony is held on February 22. In the meantime, I will continue to inform you what good movies are coming out and what to go see.

Historic Day

As you are all aware now, President Obama is now our 44th President of the United States of America. I am sure many of you watched the inauguration, I watched a bit of it. I have to admit, he was not my first choice, however, I realize with him being elected as our president marks an important day in history, we now have a black president, which marks a big step for us as a nation. I hope he does well as our president.

In other news, Oscar nominations are announced this Thursday. Hopefully you all tune in for that. As well, they are re-releasing The Dark Knight in select theaters this Friday, mainly to grab everyone's attention before the Oscars. I am sure many of you have a DVD or Blu-Ray copy so probably won't need to go to the theater, but of course if any of you want to see it on the IMAX screen, then this is your chance. Inkheart also arrives in theaters this week, which looks really good.

I have found some pretty good deals on Blu-Ray in the last few days. It is great. Of course, I am still part of the family challenge, but that doesn't include gift cards which I had. I got Entrapment for $15 and Iron Man for $17, great deals! Plus, I still have a lot to use, but will try to save them for another month when more good stuff comes out. Iron Man is great on Blu-Ray, detail of course is excellent.

Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-Ray worth checking out!

I watched Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-Ray last night, and I can tell you that the picture and sound are awesome. For anyone out there looking at getting a Blu-Ray Player, I recommend picking this one up, as it looks gorgeous on a TV! And also, this is a really good movie. I really like Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. Again, anyone getting a Blu-Ray player, buy this one.

There were a few movies that were released in theaters yesterday. They were Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Hotel for Dogs, and My Bloody Valentine 3D. Nothing that really catches my attention, except for Paul Blart, I think it looks funny and it seems like it is like Die Hard 1 for the kids. I haven't been going to the theater lately as I am still on the spending diet. In February, I will be able to return to the theater again.

2008 Review

This has been a great year for movies. In my mind, I will remember this year when the movie industry tried many different ideas. For example, earlier this year they released Cloverfield, a movie about a giant monster that attacks New York, and the whole movie is taken from a camcorder. I thought the idea was cleaver, and hope that they don’t overdo it.

Many other great movies came out this year. We got Vantage Point, a movie where we see one incident from many different points of view. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I recommend you check it out. Also, there was 21, a movie about a group of university students going to Las Vegas to count cards. You want a kung fu movie, well they provided one, The Forbidden Kingdom, a really good movie that I think is worth checking out. There was a little something for everyone.

The summer provided many great hits that will be remembered for a long time. First of all, a lot of them are hits that you wouldn’t expect. Iron Man was one movie that before the summer started, I wasn’t hyped to see it, but when I saw it, I was completely blown away. Indiana Jones made his comeback after nearly 20 years, and he was on a pretty solid adventure this time. I was impressed.

Other movies that I was really impressed with were Wall-E and The Dark Knight. Wall-E had to do with a robot left on Earth to clean up the mess, but ends up going into space when he falls in love with a robot that comes to earth. It is one movie that must be watched.

The most hyped movie this year was The Dark Knight, and it was for many reasons. It became the number one movie this year at the box office, and also became the number 2 movie in the box office of all time. Amazing, and that is the best way to describe the movie. Of course there were many great movies as well this summer, like Kung Fu Panda, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, Get Smart, and the list goes on.

The fall and winter provided with many more great movies. Eagle Eye, Madagascar 2, Quantum of Solace, Valkyrie, Transporter 3, and much more.

The home entertainment industry made some pretty awesome advancements. The iTunes store began to carry more movies, and allowed the rent feature.

Also, we finally saw a winner in the high definition format war. Two formats were battling for the top prize, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. An end to the format war was in sight at the beginning of the year when Warner Bros. announced that in June it would be dropping support on HD-DVD and only support Blu-Ray. The war officially ended when Toshiba announced it would stop producing HD-DVD. I have seen both formats and they are both good, but I think that Blu-Ray always had the edge. The good part with there only being one high definition format on the market is that there is no more confusion. Now, when you are ready to upgrade your home entertainment center to HD, then just get a Blu-Ray player, it’s that easy, and many companies are starting to take full advantage of the Blu-Ray format. I have fully dived into the Blu-Ray format now, and it is incredible what it can do.

Yes, there were many challenges that took place in 2008, mainly with the economy. However, we have seen many great things take place this year as well.

2009 should be a great year. It is already shaping up to be one.

Speaking of this year, on March 24, Quantum of Solace will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Another to add on the schedule.

Calling Ghostbusters on Blu-Ray

There have been a few announcements of movies arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray soon. First, I found out that Madagascar 2 will be arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray February 6, which is a Friday. I am surprised it is so soon, but glad because it is such a funny film. For any of you that haven't seen it, get it when it comes out, it is funny.

As well, Ghostbusters will be celebrating their 25th anniversary by releasing the movie on Blu-Ray June 16 of this year, it will have a lot of the old extra features along with some new ones. I am excited as I think this is a great movie, funny, plenty of action, and just fun.

Right now, I am on a spending diet. During the month of January, my family issued a challenge to all of us to not spend any money this month except on needs like food or gas. Not too much of a problem for me as I have gift card money at Best Buy, but trying to hold on to that till later when the really good stuff comes out. There is much to look forward to this year.

Happy New Year 2009

Sorry I haven't posted anything for a week. I hope you had a wonderful New Year holiday, I sure did, I also enjoyed my time with family. I have now seen Yes Man and I recommend it, it is funny, there were a few parts they could have left out, but overall it was funny and Jim Carrey did a great job.

As for DVD and Blu-Ray, this week we see the release of Babylon A.D., not only does it contain the version seen in theaters, but there is an Uncut version. We are also seeing a release of Pineapple Express. There are some other releases, to me, this month doesn't look like it will have big releases on DVD or Blu-Ray. Keep your eye on sales though, you may be surprised on what you can find, but I am sure some of you are cutting back for a month after all the Christmas shopping. When you decide to spend again in February, I am sure there will be some good releases then.

I will try to post a review of last year soon, and give you a list of what may be arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray the next few months.
